Visualizing UK Waste

Here’s a neat infographic on food waste in Britain, courtesy of Rangemaster. One of the more telling details: 86 million chickens are wasted every year in the UK. What the cluck?! Another effective part of the infographic is the Wembley Stadium indicator. But it’s worth noting: UK food waste would fill that stadium 8 times […]

Monday Roundup

Plenty of news from Food Waste World recently: There’s an increased likelihood of the EU banning “best before” labels on shelf-stable foods like grains, canned goods and frozen items. The Dutch and Swedish farming ministers sent a letter recommending that course of action to the EU Agriculture Council, who discussed the issue today (but didn’t […]

Putting a Price on Food Waste

The FAO Food Wastage Footprint project released their second video, and it’s a gem. This particular video focuses on trying to calculate the myriad costs of global food waste. Spoiler alert–it’s a lot of money! Nonetheless, the video makes for required viewing.

Friday Fun

Food Wise Hong Kong was launched in 2012 by the (government) Environment Bureau with the task of reducing waste in a region with scant landfill space. To accomplish that goal, they’ve created the Don’t Be a Big Waster campaign. While it’s hard to know exactly how to take it, the video and its content are pretty great: OK, it’s […]

Living Better, Wasting Less

The Guardian normally keeps a keen eye on food waste. Starting this week, though, the UK newspaper has gone one step further by creating the Live Better Challenge. The seven month editorial project will tackle a new sustainability topic each month. Encouragingly, food waste is up first, and that’s a boon for both home cooks […]

Better Luck Next Year

Figuring out the EU food waste stance has never been easy. There’s the European Parliament, European Commission, EU FUSIONS and more. Yet, I thought I had one thing figured out: 2014 was going to be a key year. It was going to be the European Year Against Food Waste. Wrong. While keeping track of the exact details is […]

Visualizing Australian Food Waste

Apparently, infographic month continues here at Wasted Food, this time for Australia. My favorite stat from Foodwise: Australia’s annual food waste would fill enough trash trucks to stretch from Oz to New Zealand three times! (I will refrain from making a lame Outback Steakhouse joke here.)

Britain Banning Food Waste from Landfills?

It’s hard to argue against keeping food waste out of landfills (where it yields the climate-changing methane emissions). Figuring out how to make that a national reality is just plain hard. With Vision 2020: The Future of Food Waste Recycling, PDM Group and ReFood have done just that for the UK. As this helpful summary article mentions, the report provides […]

Coming Attractions: Food Waste Protocol

The World Resources Institute just announced plans to create a Global Food Loss and Waste Measurement Protocol. Not since 1984 and Goldie Hawn’s glory days have I been so excited about the word ‘protocol.’ WRI, a DC-based think tank, is creating this set of guidelines to help countries and companies measure and monitor food waste/loss. The GFLWP, […]

Don’t Waste ‘World Food Day’

Today is World Food Day, and this year’s theme is “Sustainable Food Systems for Food Security and Nutrition.” That’s not quite the same thing as food waste, but it’s really close. It’s a good opportunity to think about how fortunate most of us are to have regular access to food and to try to make […]
